How GiveAway works

Giving away and getting free things near you takes just a few steps. Here is exactly how it works — for givers and for receivers.

Giving something away

  1. Create your free account. Sign up with your email or Google account and confirm that you are 18 or older.
  2. Take a few photos. Clear photos in daylight get the most requests. You can add up to 8 photos.
  3. Describe it honestly. Mention the condition, size and any faults. Choose a category and enter your postal code — only your area is shown, never your address.
  4. We check it. Our team reviews new listings, usually within a few hours, to keep the site free of spam and prohibited items.
  5. Receive requests. Interested people send you a short message. You can see their rating, reviews and whether they are verified.
  6. Choose one person. Tap Choose this person on the request you prefer. The other requests wait in line as backups in case your first choice cannot come.
  7. Hand it over. Agree on a time and place in the chat. At pickup, ask for the receiver’s 4-digit handover code and enter it to confirm.

Getting something for free

  1. Search near you. Type what you need and your postal code, or browse the categories.
  2. Send a request. Say briefly why you would like the item and when you can collect it. You can send up to 10 requests a week, so choose what you really need.
  3. Wait for the giver’s choice. Givers decide who receives their item — it is not first-come, first-served. A friendly, specific message helps.
  4. Collect it in person. When your request is accepted you get a 4-digit handover code. Share it with the giver only when the item is in your hands.
  5. Say thank you. Leave a review after the handover. Good reviews help you with future requests.

The handover code — why it matters

The 4-digit code confirms that both people met and the item really changed hands. It protects givers from false “I never got it” claims and builds a trustworthy history for receivers.

Only the receiver can see the code. Never share it before you have the item. After five wrong attempts the code is locked, and the giver has to accept the request again to create a new one.

Ratings, reviews and the Verified badge

  • After a handover, both people rate each other from 1 to 5 stars and can add a comment.
  • Reviews stay hidden until both people have reviewed, or 21 days have passed — so everyone can be honest.
  • The Verified badge means the member has confirmed their email address and their mobile number has been checked.
  • Ratings are shown on listings and on every member’s public profile.

A few simple rules

  • Everything is free. Never ask for — or pay — money, deposits or delivery charges.
  • Only give items that are allowed. See our community guidelines.
  • Listings stay online for 30 days. Confirm the handover with the code once your item has gone.
  • Be respectful, reply to messages and turn up on time — or cancel early.
