Diwali safai checklist: declutter room by room and give it away

Diwali safai is the one time of the year when every loft, almirah and kitchen shelf gets emptied. This checklist helps you decide quickly — and makes sure the useful things reach someone who needs them.

One simple rule

If you have not used something in the last year and it still works, give it away. If it is broken and cannot be repaired, recycle it. Everything else, keep — and put it back neatly.

Kitchen

  • Extra steel utensils, plates and glasses from functions
  • Second pressure cooker, mixer or toaster you never use
  • Unused gift sets — dinner sets, glass jars, lunch boxes
  • Do not give away opened food or medicines (not allowed on GiveAway)

Bedroom and almirahs

  • Clothes not worn for a year — wash and bundle by size
  • Extra bedsheets, curtains, blankets and quilts
  • Bags, suitcases and shoes in good condition

Children's room

  • Outgrown clothes, school shoes and uniforms
  • Toys and board games with all pieces
  • Last year's books, story books and colouring books
  • Cycles, prams and cots

Loft, balcony and store room

  • Coolers, heaters and fans that still work
  • Old furniture — chairs, side tables, shelves
  • Plant pots and garden tools
  • Broken electronics → take to e-waste collection, not the bin (see our guide on old phones and laptops)

Give it away before Diwali

List things as you clean — a quick photo and a two-line description is enough. Items listed a week or two before Diwali reach families before the festival. Use "First to ask gets it" if you want things out of the house fast.

คำถามที่พบบ่อย

Can I give away old diyas, decorations and lights?

Yes, if they are clean and working. Test electric lights before listing.

What about sweets and dry fruits gifts?

Food cannot be given away on GiveAway. Share sealed sweets with neighbours or staff directly instead.
