Old phones and laptops: give them away safely (and recycle the rest)

An old phone or laptop that still works can be a student's first computer or a parent's first smartphone. Before you give it away, make sure none of your personal data goes with it.

1. Back up, sign out, wipe

  1. Back up photos, contacts and files to your new device or cloud storage.
  2. Sign out of your Google or Apple account, WhatsApp, banking and UPI apps, email and social media. On phones, turn off "Find my device" so the next person can set it up.
  3. Remove the SIM card and any memory card.
  4. Factory reset the device (Settings → System → Reset on Android; Settings → General → Transfer or Reset on iPhone; the recovery/reset option on laptops).
  5. Check that the device starts with the setup screen and none of your accounts.

Never give away a device that still has your UPI or banking apps signed in.

Who can use an old device?

  • Students — for online classes, coding practice and exam preparation.
  • Older family members of neighbours — a simple smartphone for video calls.
  • Small shops and workers — for UPI payments and messages.
  • NGOs and schools — some partner organisations collect working laptops for computer classes.

Describe what works and what does not (battery life, cracked screen, missing charger). Include the charger if you can.

Devices that do not work: e-waste

Broken electronics contain materials that are harmful if burned or dumped, and valuable materials that can be recovered. Under India's E-Waste (Management) Rules, manufacturers run collection and take-back programmes, and the Central Pollution Control Board publishes lists of authorised collection centres and recyclers.

  • Check the manufacturer's website for take-back or collection points.
  • Use an authorised e-waste collection centre in your city.
  • Do not put batteries, phones or bulbs in household waste.

คำถามที่พบบ่อย

Is a factory reset enough to remove my data?

For modern phones with encryption (most Android phones and all iPhones of recent years), a factory reset after signing out of your accounts is enough. For old laptops, use the operating system's reset option with "remove everything" / "clean the drive".

Can I give away a phone with a cracked screen?

Yes, if it works — mention the crack clearly in the description and photos.

Can I give away a device that was bought on EMI?

Only if it is fully paid and you own it. Never give away a device that belongs to your employer.
